Sodium benzoate also known as benzoate of soda is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, widely used as a food preservative (with an E number of E211) and a pickling agent. 

 Preservatives are added to oral liquid medications, such as syrups and suspensions, primarily to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination. Importance: Oral liquid formulations are susceptible to microbial growth due to their liquid nature and the presence of water, which creates an ideal environment for microorganisms to thrive.
